Robinson and Potts Spark Durham Fightback After Stokes’ Heroics Against Northamptonshire

An outstanding all-rounder performance from Oliver Robinson, backed up by a terrific display of metronomic discipline with the ball from Matthew Potts, lifted Durham out of trouble on the third day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire. The hosts had put up a determined fightback, having conceded a few initial leads with an aim to keep the contest in balance heading into the last day.

In their first innings, Northamptonshire scored 450 to gain the early ascendancy in a contest that had been very much their match. Opener Ricardo Vasconcelos top scored with a terrific 187, while Saif Zaib also made 61 and Luke Procter chipped in with 58. Matthew Potts and Ben Raine with three wickets apiece finished off the innings, but Durham were firmly established in the driving seat by then.

Durham could not have asked for a worse start to their reply, losing 30 for 3 which brought England captain Ben Stokes into the firing line. Stokes batted with just the right amount of aggression in response, scoring 95 from just 118 deliveries (18×4) and at one point sharing a match-defining partnership worth 153 runs with Will Rhodes, who played quietly for his 62. Durham were brought to their knees by the stand, however Stokes was denied a deserved century by an unfortunate 91.

Durham were still behind at this point, Stokes’ wicket a serious blow, but Oliver Robinson saw to it that the innings did not suffer total collapse. With the lower order backing him up, his unbeaten innings gradually whittled away Northamptonshire’s dominant position and held the home side in reach of their visitors’ score. The resilience of Robinson would prove important in pushing the momentum to Durham’s side again.

In Northamptonshire’s second innings, Durham reacted strongly with the bat. Matthew Potts (3-83) continued his superb match with early wickets, while Robinson’s all-round form pluses up kept the champions knocked back to within range of Northamptonshire. After the first two days had appeared to turn into a one-way contest, Durham’s spirited performance turned the match into an absorbing tight tussle that looked as if it too would yield either a win or more serious hope of salvation.

Expect an interesting ending on the last day with Northamptonshire trying to set a target that can be defended and Durham buoyed by their recovery. Stokes’ swashbuckling 95, the immense determination shown in Robinson’s batting and Potts had bowled well enough to help keep this game alive following Northamptonshire’s earlier dominance of the County Championship encounter.
