New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year career. The former Black Caps captain made the announcement during New Zealand’s ongoing Test series against England, saying that stepping away now “just feels like the right time.”

Williamson’s decision comes just days after the opening Test against England, where he scored 0 and 18. Despite speculation surrounding his future, the 35-year-old revealed that the decision was based on careful reflection rather than recent performances. He explained that after giving everything he had to New Zealand cricket, he felt the moment had arrived to make way for the next generation.

“I’ve given everything to this team,” Williamson said while addressing reporters. He added that when he looks around the dressing room and sees the talent coming through, he feels confident about the team’s future and believes this is the right moment to step aside.

Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever cricketers, Williamson leaves the international stage as the country’s leading run-scorer across formats, having accumulated more than 19,000 runs. His Test career alone produced 9,515 runs, including 33 centuries in 110 matches. He also represented New Zealand in 175 One-Day Internationals and 93 T20 Internationals.

Among Williamson’s greatest achievements was leading New Zealand to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final against India in 2021. He also captained the Black Caps to the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup, earning widespread respect for his calm leadership and sportsmanship.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter praised Williamson’s influence on and off the field, describing him as a world-class player whose professionalism helped shape the culture of the national team. While his international career has ended, Williamson is expected to continue playing franchise cricket around the world.

His retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket and closes a significant chapter in the story of one of the modern game’s most admired players.
