England hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match Crowe-Thorpe Trophy series going into the second Test against Kiwi’s at The Oval with Wednesday’s contest facing its own fresh scrutiny to go along with a much-changed hosts’ lineup.
The opening Test at Lord’s witnessed England winning by 115 runs on a pitch that made batting tough, especially in the second innings. New Zealand, however, are expected to give a better account of themselves after an off-key showing in the first Test.
England’s New-Look Attack
The hosts have been compelled to make several changes. As regular captain Ben Stokes is missing, Joe Root will lead the side in Manchester. Tyler Harwood, the squad’s only other fast bowler, is unavailable due to a sore right knee that ruled him out of contention for this match.
England’s reshuffled XI sees Jofra Archer return and Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker given Test caps The fast bowling department particularly is inexperienced, with Archer, Josh Tongue, Matt Fisher and Baker combined having a few Test caps.
Responding to the wayward off-pitch action that has seeped into his side’s season, Root said professional behaviour is paramount and learning from recent high-profile indiscretions.
New Zealand In The Post-Kane Williamson Era
New Zealand will arrive at The Oval with one major change of their own. The tour also saw Kane Williamson retire from international cricket after a stellar 16-year career. That leaves a massive hole in the visitors’ batting order.
Even with the group of players out, that leaves a fairly solid core in Tom Latham, Rachlin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell and Kyle Jamieson. Their strong bowling spearhead of Matt Henry and Jamieson will be looking to take full advantage of whatever assistance presented from the Oval surface.
What’s at Stake
An England win would give them the series with a Test to spare, but the Black Caps need to win this week to keep the series alive and set up a decider at Trent Bridge later in July. This match is also part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.
The second Test, with England’s young bowling unit and New Zealand keen to bounce back from their Lord’s defeat after their worst defeat since the end of last summer, will be an intriguing contest between a team trying to drive on into top form and another desperate to keep the series alive.
