In the 2026 ACC Men’s Challenger Cup, Cambodia’s campaign was marred by visa issues that meant they were unable to field a full playing XI in Singapore. This resulted in Cambodia forfeiting their group stage matches against Indonesia and Uzbekistan, crippling its campaign.
Three players in the Cambodian squad were turned away when they applied to get entry visas for Singapore and one of those injured out before the tournament. These setbacks left an insufficient number of players available to be selected, leaving Cambodia unable to field a team at the minimum required level.
In another match, forfeitures gave Indonesia and Uzbekistan automatic victories in Group D of the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup. Neither match had a ball bowled, with rapid-fire proceedings by tournament officials resulting in the two matches being recorded as walkovers for Cambodia’s opponents.
The incident highlights the logistical hurdles emerging cricket nations have to face. Associate-member teams have to run on smaller budgets using skeleton crews while facing challenges with travel, visas and making sure players are able to show up at all. After some encouraging performances for an emerging Asian cricketing nation in recent years, Cambodia were anticipated to put on a strong challenge following impressive displays at regional level.
The ACC Men’s Challenger Cup is significant in that it acts as one of the pathways tournaments for cricketing nations in Asia to earn valuable international exposure and progress through the Asian Cricket Council’s qualification process. With data available until October 2023, Cambodia pulling out of its group matches is thus a big blow for both the players and cricket development in that country.
The Cambodian cricket officials are expected to review the circumstances under which visa denials occurred, as well efforts for an International Competition or event of this nature not only take place in future again. This allows Indonesia and Uzbekistan to progress in the competition, with both able to pick up points from their walkover victories.
